Karin Kortjé is the winner of the third South African season of the television talent competition, Idols. She hails from the small farming community of Grabouw in the Western Cape, where she used to earn a living packing apples. Karin has been singing professionally for years, in a local jazz band named The Elginaires.
The Elginaires were instrumental in helping her enter Idols, and mobilising the town to support her through the entire Idols experience.
Throughout the competition Karin charmed the Idols judges and the record television audience, to become one of the most popular Idols winners ever. As part of her prize package, Karin won a recording contract with BMG Sony, one of the biggest record companies in the world. After concluding a very busy festive season of performances, Karin has now relocated to Johannesburg in order to begin recording and to continue pursuing her musical dreams.
Karin loves jazz, hip-hop and kwaito music and named Whitney Houston and Judith Sepuma as her musical idols. Her eclectic musical influences are reflected in the wide range of her talent as a musician, but her chief inspiration continues to be her three-year-old son, Cameron. Her dream is “to give my child a better future, to make a success in this business so he can have a better life,” she says.
Karin plans for 2006 to be a pivotal year filled with new adventures. Now that she has moved to Gauteng she has started work on her first album, due for release in April. One of the highlights of Karin’s year will be the volunteer work that she has signed up for with the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. Karin plans to act as a proud ambassador for the hospital which is the only dedicated paediatric hospital in sub-Saharan Africa and sees more than 250 000 patients per year. Her involvement will include performances and appearances in aid of raising important awareness around the Red Cross and its fundraising efforts for South Africa’s children.
In amongst these exciting projects, Karin is also filling her diary with appearances around the country and as far a field as Swaziland.
