Lerato Mbele is a female South African journalist .

Her career began as an intern at the SA Broadcasting Corporation, where she quickly rose through the ranks of the radio current affairs department, to host a Diplomatic Programme, the Ambassadors, on the pan-african television station SABC Africa. After a successful run in broadcasting, Lerato briefly left broadcasting to work as a political scientist at the SA Institute of International Affairs. The lure of television broadcasting was such that, Lerato eventually returned to the SABC to anchor the newly launched News@10 programme, on the premier channel SABC 3. During this time she also hosted the weekly media-review current affairs programme, In the Public Interest.

After 2-years at SABC 3, CNBC Africa approached Lerato to join their new African network. Initially she anchored The Other Dimension on CNBC Africa, a programme that tackles pressing political and economic issues in modern day Africa with African leaders. She currently anchors the daily breakfast programme Business AM, a fast-paced news & current affairs programme that analyzes stock exchanges; capital markets; economics; news and political issues impacting on development in Africa.

Lerato Mbele is co-editor of the book Designing Democracy. She is also the recipient of the Pauline Janisch Award for Literature from the World Association of University Women. She also received an award for literature from the Department of Psychology, from Amherst College, Massachusetts. Lerato has tried to keep up the momentum of her writing, by being a columnist at City Press Newspaper.

In year 2006, she was voted as one of the “Top 100 South-Africans”, by the Star Newspaper. Lerato is a Chevening Scholar. She is also an Ambassador for Change, an anti-poverty initiative by the Southern Africa Trust.
